history of Murfreesboro began when the Tennessee State Legislature of 1811 elected a 60-acre plot of land, owned by Captain William Lytle, to become the county seat of Rutherford. Its original name was Cannonsburg, but was changed to its current name after Colonel Hardy Murfree, a friend of Lytle.
